The Timothy J. Atkinson Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Timothy J. Atkinson Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 to honor the memory to Tim Atkinson, the former Executive Director of The Arc of Carroll County.
After graduating from Alderson-Broaddes College in West Virginia in 1972, Tim began his career as the Executive Director of the Potomac Valley Sheltered Workshop in Keyser. Tim came to Carroll County in 1975 as the Workshop Director for the organization then known as the Carroll County Association for Retarded Citizens. He became Executive Director of CCARC and its workshop, Summer Enterprises, in 1988.
Tim changed the name of the organization to The Arc of Carroll County in 1995 and brought with it a new image of inclusion and public awareness. When The Arc celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005, Tim introduced the inspirational tag line “Where Ability Matters Most” as a vision for the future.
This scholarship honors Tim’s legacy of passion, compassion, dedication and leadership in his decades of service to people with disabilities.
The scholarship will be awarded each spring to a student who intends to enter a field that will assist or advocate for people with disabilities. Eligible candidates must be a Carroll County resident and must be accepted for admission or be currently attending as a full-time student at an accredited college or university in pursuit of a related degree.
